    History of Linnakrouvi

Linnakrouvi’s historical yellow building in Linnankatu 7 was built before 1870 for a Russian construction foreman Bogotsky. Later in the 19th century Savonlinna’s first male teacher, Aleksander Ramstedt, moved in. He was also the founder of Savonlinna’s choir and part of the city government.

After this a Swedish teacher, Pekka Jyrkänkoski, lived in the building with Joel Lehtonen who wrote a book about his life at the school and in Linnankatu 7. The book was banned in the school because of his writings about his school friends and teachers.

Adam Malm, a teacher and Olavinlinna Castle’s janitor and guide, lived in the building with his family before photographer Sihvonen bought the house from them in 1927. Sihvonen built a small kiosk to the building where he sold sodas, ice cream, sweets and photography equipment. Many old Savonlinna pictures are taken by Sihvonen. His daughter Kerttu Kupiainen has written a book “Kaupunki saarilla” where she tells about her childhood in Linnankatu. The family sold the house to merchant Lehtola in 1953. Current owners bought the building in the 1980s.
